What to bring

  • Essentials: A good flashlight (headlamps work great), a sun hat, and a water bottle.
  • Clothing: Lightweight clothing as well as some long sleeved shirts and pants which come handy outdoors. Knee-high socks can prove to be useful in the fields with shorts. Most importantly, bring good and comfortable shoes – perhaps one pair of sandals (or crocs) and one pair of hiking or rubber boots.
  • Money: There are no ATMs around so bring some cash with you. You can change money at any bank or at the airport.
  • Other: We have an open wishlist of items that we need if you’d like to contribute to some of RDS’s projects. Children’s and specialized books are always needed as well as organic seeds. Please contact us for our up to date list.

What’s the weather like

Temperatures range in the 70s-80s during the day, and comfortable 60s at night. We have a very particular and unique micro-climate due to our altitude, rich influences from both the mountainous and the sea climates, and the fact that there is no deforestation on our land and the surrounding region (dominated by the La Cangreja national park).

As is typical in the tropics, our climate is governed by 2 distinct seasons:

Dry season

When everyday is the most beautiful sunny day you’ve ever seen! The gorgeous light so special to the tropics is particularly noticeable during this time. Our specific micro-climate is a rare combination of mountain and sea influences which contribute to what’s one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.

Green season

For many, it’s one of the most magical times of the year. In the midst of the costa rican green season, when the nature all around is as lush as ever, you get to enjoy bright sunny mornings, followed by welcomed cloudy afternoons with refreshing torrential rain showers at nights – only to wake up the next morning to yet another wonderful and sunny morning.

Of course there can be impromptu rain at absolutely any time – or many days without rain at all. But the delicious combination of tropical rains with plenty of sun makes this time of year particularly attractive. Not to mention lower prices on pretty much everything.

How to get here

There are a plenty of options for getting here from Costa Rica’s international airport (SJO) in San Jose. Depending on your particular preference you can:

  • Arrive here by bus. The service is very reliable and the trip can be fascinating. Check out the detailed instructions for getting here by bus – you’ll arrive right at our front door with the evening bus at around 5:30pm – and we’ll be waiting for you at the gate!
  • Get picked up by a private driver for a door to door service. It’ll cost $140 which you’ll pay directly to the driver. Let us know and we can set that up for you.
  • Rent a car at the airport and follow the directions to get here by car (it’s a beautiful 2 hour drive).

Bus directions:

  1. From the airport, take either a bus or cab to get to San José’s Comtrasuli bus terminal which is located downtown on Avenida 1 between Calle 16 and Calle 18.
  2. From there, take one of the frequent buses (express if possible) to Puriscal. The trip from San José to Puriscal takes about 1 hour. Get off at the last stop in Puriscal which is the Comtrasuli bus terminal.
  3. From the Comtrasuli bus station in Puriscal, take a right and walk 1.5 blocks (toward the center of town). The bus to Mastatal leaves from right across the street from the “Supermora” supermarket’s parking lot at 3pm. Make sure to arrive a good 20 minutes before the bus departs to assure a seat. There is sometimes a sign on the bus that reads “Zapatón” though you should ask the driver where he is going to be sure. The bus trip to Mastatal takes about 2 hours.
  4. Ask the driver to drop you directly in front of our gate (tell him “Finca Raices del Sol donde Anna y Noam”).

Car directions:

  1. Take the highway out of San Jose going towards Ciudad Colón and Puriscal (sometimes referred to as Santiago).
  2. In Ciudad Colón follow the one-way streets and signs towards Puriscal.
  3. Once in Puriscal, follow signs to Parrita/Quepos.
  4. Continue on the main road – the paved road ends about 15 kilometers outside of Puriscal.
  5. About 1 hour after leaving Puriscal you will arrive to a small intersection with signs to Mastatal and Zapatón. Make this left hand turn to go up the hill and continue for 6 kilometers until you arrive to the town of Mastatal.
  6. As you enter Mastatal turn left immediately towards Zapatón.
  7. Five minutes up the road you will pass by “Villas Mastatal” on the right – our property starts right at that point and the main gate is about 200 meters further on your right.
